Masters in International Relations and Diplomacy

Are you looking for a two-year Masters study that blends political theory with global diplomacy? Then maybe my program in International Relations and Diplomacy (MIRD) is the right one for you. I have completed my first semester and these are some of my favorite parts of the MIRD.

Diplomacy and learning through practice

When applying for universities a year ago, the MIRD quickly caught my attention due to its focus on diplomacy and practical learning. It is one of the only graduate programs that offers a concentration in global diplomacy. In the MIRD, we begin by exploring the foundations of international relations and European politics and then quickly proceed to courses with an emphasis on practical learning. Because of the programs affiliation with the Netherlands Institute of International Relations Clingendael, we receive training directly from the institute's professionals. We also follow courses on conflict resolution, where we learn to negotiate in real-life scenarios.

During our first semester, we also took a trip to Brussels to learn directly about the European Union. After a month of reading about the European institutions, it was helpful to visit them in person. This trip allowed us to learn beyond the classroom and put our theoretical skills into practice. It was also a great way to kick off the year and meet new friends.

Located in the heart of The Hague

In the MIRD program, we are located in one of the most dynamic cities of the Netherlands. Although the program is part of Leiden University, it is situated in The Hague, near all the main international organizations. This location has allowed us to truly become immersed within our field of study.

Small class sizes

Another benefit of the program is that we have small class sizes. We are approximately forty-five students in my year. Although we are not numerous, we still come from a diversity of nationalities. In class, this has allowed for stimulating discussions and different perspectives. It has also ensured that we receive personal attention from our professors.
